Beware Mailbox Fishing Scams

Recently there has been an uptick in fraudsters “fishing” for personal and financial information by stealing outgoing envelopes with checks, money, and personal information from mailboxes and U.S. Postal Service boxes. Once they have the checks, scammers use techniques to erase the original details and produce fraudulent checks.

To help protect yourself and your mail from the scams, here are some proactive measures you can take:

  • Drop off envelopes containing personal information or checks inside the post office or hand them directly to your mail carrier.
  • Avoid mailing cash.
  • Pay bills online with Online Banking.
  • Monitor your accounts using Online and Mobile Banking.
  • Set up Account Alerts and Updates through Online Banking.
